Generation of Electrical Energy

The conversion of different forms of energy available in nature into electrical energy is known as generation of electrical energy.

The generation of electrical is just like the production of commodities like cloth, paper etc from the raw material in a similar manner electricity is manufactured from the natural resources available on the earth. But the difference is that other commodities are manufactured and consumed by users through market or by other means whereas electrical energy is produced and transmitted to the consumer where he needed and could use according to their need and all this process happens in a bit second. There are many technical and economical aspects regarding the the production of electricity in a commercial manner.

Energy is available in various form in nature like pressure head of a water reservoir, natural springs, wind energy, chemicals, waves, radio active substances etc.All these energy sources could be converted into electrical energy by adopting suitable methods.

How other forms of energy could be converted into electrical energy ?

The simple arrangement for conversion of other forms of energy into electrical energy is shown below.

The arrangement consists of an alternator coupled to a prime mover. The prime mover is rotated or the energy for it is obtained from various other sources of energy such as water, wind, solar power, fuels etc.For example the heat energy obtained from burning of fuel could be used to make steam and this steam could be forced to move through a nozzle and made to strike a turbine ie the prime mover so in this case the heat energy is converted to mechanical energy and this mechanical energy into electrical energy. The conversion of mechanical energy into electrical energy is done by means of the alternator.Similarly other forms of energies could also be converted into electrical energy by employing suitable equipments.
